Herbert Arthur Jordan and Elizabeth Marie Pajewski were married on August 21, 1918 at St. Raphael's Parish in Chicago, Illinois. Herbert was 20 years old and Elizabeth was 22. Elizabeth worked as a cashier at Morris and Company (later Armour Meat Company) where she met her husband. Chicago Directory data indicates that he was a clerk at Morris in 1916 and a cashier in 1917. The Directory also indicates that she was a waitress in 1917 at Morris.

They must have agreed to marry sometime before Aug 21, 1918 as Elizabeth insisted that he become a Catholic before she would marry him. From a 1978 audio tape, Elizabeth made with my dad, she stated that Herbert worked in Pennsylvania for Morris and Company for awhile and that he received his baptismal instruction and was baptized in Westover, Pennsylvania. This is thought to be in 1917 or early in 1918.

Herbert like other young men at the time was required to file in a WWI draft registration card. He did so on July 24, 1918. With pending call up, it appears they set a date to be married the next month.

Herbert trained to be an Army cook at Lookout Mountain in the Chattanooga area. However, he never went overseas as he became ill with the Spanish flu influenza of 1918 which was sweeping the world. Family recollections are he was sick and flat on his back for 6 weeks and almost died.

Dave Jordan received a copy of the original of this photograph in the 1980s, possibly by Herb and Dorothy Jordan. There may be several originals around.
